Academic English

The Academic English course provides the quickest and most effective route towards reaching your required English language level. The course is designed to help you gain the language fluency and academic skills you need to succeed at university.

What is special about the programme?

This intensive course offers 30 learning hours per week, which will include 25 hours of face-to-face learning and 5 hours of teacher-supported online language development. The programme will be personalised to your individual needs, with assessments to monitor your progress on a regular basis and ensure you stay on track.

Who should apply?

This course is ideally suited to students who do not yet meet the required English language level needed for further academic study. Once you’ve reached the level required for your chosen course, along with all other necessary requirements, you can progress to your INTO pathway programme.

What will I study?

- Integrated Language Skills (15 hours per week)
- Teacher Supported Online Language Development (5 hours per week)

- Engagement and Communicative Language Skills - Levels 1-3 (5 hours per week)
- Research and Study Skills - Levels 4-5 (5 hours per week)

- Preparation for International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (5 hours per week) 
- Topics for University Study (5 hours per week)*

* You will study language and content related to your future studies, so you are better prepared for your academic course, including: subject-based vocabulary, developing subject-based skills, building on knowledge and expanding your understanding of relevant subject matter.

How will I be assessed?

In your first two weeks, we will test your language level to ensure you’re placed in the right class to support your language development and help you plan which modules you’ll need to study.

If you attend all your classes, complete all of the exercises assigned to you by your teacher and make the most of the digital learning platform provided, you can expect to progress by up to one IELTS band per term. And by getting involved in life at the centre outside of your classes, you can build on your new language skills even further. Once you’ve reached the language level required for your chosen course, and met any other necessary requirements , you can progress on to your INTO pathway programme.

  • Give my opinion on familiar topics and describe situations such as family, study and work
  • Read and write simple texts including emails, short essays and descriptions.
  • Take responsibility for my progress and study independently.
  • Use free time to develop awareness of British Culture.


4.5 - 5.5


  • Communicate with reasonable fluency and give short presentations
  • Take an active part in discussions on a range of topics
  • Read and understand a variety of texts on various topics
  • Make simple notes to use for assignments and revision
  • Write short essays and reports, connecting my ideas logically
  • Organise my own studies and manage my time to meet deadlines
  • Use free time to engage with the local community


5.5 - 6.5


  • Participate effectively in seminars, discussions and social situations
  • Understand and interpret a variety of academic texts
  • Start to use critical thinking skills when reading and listening to academic texts
  • Make precise, relevant notes from both spoken and written sources
  • Write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects expressing personal and contrasting points of view
  • Conduct research using appropriate resources to support academic study
  • Access and use an information database from university resources
  • Engage with confidence in the local community and have gained a good knowledge of British Culture


6.0 - 7.0


  • Express myself fluently and use language confidently for social and academic purposes
  • Understand complex academic texts and recognise implicit meaning
  • Use critical thinking skills effectively when I read and listen to academic texts
  • Write clear, well-structured and detailed essays and reports
  • Carry out extensive research using appropriate resources to support my academic studies
  • Reflect on my own performance and identify areas for improvement

How do I qualify?


English requirements:

IELTS 3.0 or equivalent. 

From 6 April 2015, the Centre can only accept a UKVI approved IELTS test for this course. Read more about UKVI IELTS or contact us for more details.


16 years and above 

You must also meet the minimum age requirements for your chosen academic programme. Please contact INTO Admissions for further information.
