What is special about the programme?

English for University Study is a year-round course of intensive academic English language study designed to prepare you either for entry to a further academic preparation programme at INTO City, University of London or for entry to your degree at City, University of London.

As well as teaching you how to adapt to university-style teaching and improving your English language and academic study skills you'll also benefit from:

Enhanced English for University Study

The Enhanced English for University Study programme offers the standard 20 contact hours per week plus an additional module to ensure you make the most of your learning experience. This extra module will focus on language and provide a further 10 learning hours per week which will utilise both face-to-face and online activities, as well as flexible online coursework so you can work at a time that suits you.

Who should apply?

Students who have a score of between IELTS 4.0 and 5.5 on arrival and aim to progress on to an academic programme with INTO will benefit from this programme. It’s particularly well suited to motivated students who want to make progress quickly and intend to improve their IELTS score by up to one full point. As all students improve at different speeds, when calculating your study plan you should base this on an increase of between 0.5 and 1.0 IELTS band each term.

What will I study?

This course will enable you to develop your knowledge, ability and confidence in a variety of skills that are essential for higher education, as well as giving you a greater command of written and spoken English.

You will study:

  • core English language skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking and pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary
  • study skills: teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking and time management.

The course comprises 20 hours of taught lessons per week plus additional support where required, which will be supervised by your tutor. In order to make good progress, you are expected to do approximately 20 additional hours of private study outside class.

Assessment

At the end of each term, your skills and language will be assessed to give a clear indication of your progress. Methods of assessment may include:

  • written assignments
  • presentations
  • research projects
  • reading, writing and listening examinations.

 

Where will it take me?

Course outcomes

As part of the course, you will receive independent advice and guidance to support your university selection and the process of applying to a UK university.

As long as you have met the academic requirements for your chosen degree programme, successful completion of the course offers:

  • direct entry to an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme at City, University of London
  • assured progression to an International Foundation or Graduate Diploma programme (subject to meeting Tier 4 student visa requirements)

Enhanced English for University Study

What will I study?

This programme provides an additional 10 learning hours per week to the 20 contact hours on the standard English for University Study course. You'll build on essential language skills and vocabulary, and practice what you have learned in class, benefitting from additional face-to-face contact hours and online learning to encourage engagement and communication in English.

How do I qualify?

 

English requirements:

IELTS 3.0 (with a minimum of 3.0 in writing) or equivalent. 

From 6 April 2015, the Centre can only accept a UKVI approved IELTS test for this course. Read more about UKVI IELTS or contact us for more details.

Age:

17 years and above 

Note: Students aged 16 will be accepted if holding an offer for progression to the International Foundation (subject to meeting the Foundation age requirement)

Students must take a minimum of one term.

Tuition fees do not include textbooks and other learning materials which are an additional £80 per academic term.

How long will it take to improve my IELTS score?

On average students are likely to progress at a rate of about 0.5 on the IELTS scale for every 12 weeks of study. So if you only need to improve your IELTS score by 0.5 you need to study this course for one term. If you need to improve by 1.0 IELTS score then take two terms. Please note that these are guidelines only and every student is different.
