The Graduate Diploma in Economics is a full-time academic programme that prepares you for postgraduate study in business economics and international business economics at City, University of London. You will improve your language skills, increase your knowledge in academic subjects and develop the necessary study and research skills for postgraduate study. Teaching methods

Our teaching style is designed to encourage you to think independently. Technology is used to enhance the classroom experience with real-time interactive writing tasks, as well as accessing online academic databases from the classroom. And the small class sizes mean even lectures provide an opportunity for discussions to take place.

A highlight of the programme is the poster presentation you will give on your intended research topic. More interactive than traditional presentation, this task is designed to encourage discussion and peer feedback.

The Graduate Diploma is suitable for international students who need an introduction to the study of a subject in preparation to study it at postgraduate level, or to upgrade qualifications if you have studied a 3 year Diploma in a relevant subject. The Graduate Diploma is also suitable for those that want to increase or update their subject knowledge or those that need to improve their English language study skills within the context of their chosen subject.

What will I study?

All students complete a common core set of modules, plus specialist modules for your progression pathway.

Core modules:

English Language and Communication Skills

This module introduces you to the academic language and conventions of academic writing and speaking you will encounter as a postgraduate student at City, University of London. You will develop the skills needed to select, read and critically evaluate academic texts. The content of the course is linked to the subjects you are studying and this will enable you to carry out research for academic assignments and presentations. The module provides you with the confidence to work both collaboratively and independently, qualities essential for success at City, University of London.

Research Skills

This module will provide you with a basic understanding of the nature of enquiry, developing your ability to access and analyse data. A large part of the module involves analysing and interpreting existing data from various fields of research. You will also be introduced to the theoretical and practical differences between quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Independent Research Project

The compulsory Independent Research Project brings together the skills and understanding from other modules. The project can be based on primary or secondary research, and allows you to practise core skills necessary for postgraduate level study. You will be allocated a supervisor, who will offer guidance on the content and structure of your Independent Research Project. English language support will also be given.

 

Specialist modules:

Introduction to Economics

The aim of this module is to provide you with a basic understanding of micro and macro- economics, laying the foundation for a future study of economics. The module will assess the wider economic environment and apply economic thinking to current issues and problems. You will be introduced to concepts and vocabulary underlying economics in general.

Mathematics and Statistics

This module will provide you with a grounding in the usage of statistics in quantitative research, where you will be encouraged to develop your quantitative skills further and gain an insight into inferential statistics. You will be introduced to statistical concepts and methods of data analysis, which are commonly applied in the Social Sciences. There will be a strong practical element with you developing numeracy and engaging in statistical analysis across a range of problems.

 

 

How will I be assessed?

Entry to all postgraduate degrees at City, University of London is highly competitive and students hoping to study at postgraduate level must maintain high standards throughout their Graduate Diploma programme. Whilst grades in the Graduate Diploma programme do not count towards your postgraduate degree, your performance will be used to determine whether you meet the criteria for entry to your chosen postgraduate degree programme at the University. Please see the progression requirements for your intended degree below.

Assessment is both formal and informal, designed to help students build on their successes and meet requirements for entry to postgraduate study. You will be assessed by a combination of:

  • an independent research project - a written version and a presentation
  • exams
  • coursework which may include written assignments, reports, practical exercises, group and individual research projects, presentations and problem-solving exercises.

How is the programme validated?

The Graduate Diploma is quality assured and designed in partnership with City, University of London. Successful completion leads to the award of the City, University of London Graduate Diploma, at Level 6 on the National Qualification Framework (NQF).

 

How do I qualify?

 

Academic requirements:

Completion of a minimum of three years of higher education with good grades.

Previous study in an academic discipline or relevant industry experience for specialised Master's courses may be required for admission.
