What will I study?

You'll study the following modules:

Academic English and Study Skills

An introduction to academic language, university study skills and the academic writing and speaking you will need to study at a UK university. You will develop the skills needed to select, read and interpret academic texts, and carry out research for academic assignments and presentations.

Foundation Mathematics

Key mathematical concepts and notations, including manipulation of numerical and algebraic expressions; techniques for polynomial root-finding; coordinate geometry; trigonometry; differential and integral calculus; basic techniques of statistics and ideas of probability.

OR Foundation Mathematics for Economics**

Gain essential skills in linear, quadratic and cubic equations; limits, continuity and inequalities; calculus and multivariate calculus; compound growth; exponential functions and logarithms; continuous growth and natural exponential functions; derivatives of exponential and logarithmic functions; constrained maxima and minima; integration; matrix algebra; probability and data analysis.

Depending on your chosen degree you'll also study:

Introduction to the Study of Business

You'll gain a basic understanding of business and management in areas such as: models of management; the business environment; managing people; leadership; corporate social responsibility; human resource management; corporate strategy; marketing; organisational structure; and managing operations.

Economics

An introduction to thinking like an economist, we'll familiarise you with key terminology used in economics and provide an introduction to the main theoretical models and concepts used in economics. An emphasis is placed on the application of economic theory to real-world business situations.

Introduction to the Study of Accounting

Financial and management accounting, including social and environmental accounting. You'll learn basic accounting concepts and procedures used in the preparation of financial statements. You'll also learn about the major techniques used in management accounting so as to develop an appreciation of the role of management accounting in organisational planning, control, decision making and performance evaluation.

** This module is compulsory if you are intending to study BSc (Hons) Financial Economics

What are the entry requirements?

Academic requirements:

You need to have completed 12 years of schooling (or the local equivalent to meet the same standard) with good grades.

English requirements:

Two terms: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in writing) or equivalent

Three terms: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in writing) or equivalent

Four terms: IELTS 5.0 (with a minimum of 4.5 in writing) or equivalent

Age:

17 years and above.

Students starting a course in September must be 17 years old by 31 December of that calendar year. For all other start dates, students must be 17 years old on the start date of the course.

How do I apply?

What is the deadline to apply?

There isn't a deadline to apply but our popular courses fill up quickly so its best to apply as early as possible.

How is the programme validated?

The programme is validated and quality-assured by City University London. Successful completion leads to the award of the City University London International Foundation Certificate (National Qualification Framework Level 3). This certificate is welcomed as an entry qualification both at City University London and many other highly-ranked UK universities.

How will I be assessed?

You will receive support from your tutor throughout your course and be assessed by a combination of:

  • exams at the end of each term
  • coursework

Coursework may include written assignments, reports, practical exercises, group and individual research projects, presentations and problem-solving exercises.

Entry to all City University London degrees is highly competitive, so the purpose of the assessment process is to help you improve and build on your success.

Marks from the International Foundation programme do not count towards a final degree, but help the University determine whether you meet key criteria for progression.

Are there any additional costs?

  • enrolment fee:  £150 per academic programme
  • text books and other learning materials: in the region of £220 per academic course (2-3 terms), £300 per academic course (4 terms), £80 per English term

  • you'll also need to budget for your daily living costs such as food, clothes and travel

This programme is taught mostly through the use of tablet computers (such as the iPad) to enhance the classroom experience through digital learning. You'll be required to purchase an iPad before you start your course.

  • iPad fees: £300 (if you have your own compatible device and will be bringing this with you to the UK, there will be no additional charge)
