The Pre-sessional English course provides intensive preparation in academic English for students who are academically qualified and hold an offer to start an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at City, University of London in September.

What is special about the programme?

The Pre-sessional course provides intensive English language and study skills preparation in a university environment. With highly-experienced teachers, there is no better preparation for your next steps.

The course will:

  • provide contextual study skills that help you to adjust to the culture of a UK university
  • enable you to adjust to the demands, challenges and expectations of UK higher education and culture
  • teach you how to give presentations on different areas of academic interest
  • provide you with a short period of time to adapt to living and studying in the UK prior to beginning your academic studies

Who should apply for the Pre-sessional English programme?

This course is suitable for you if you are academically qualified, hold an offer from City, University of London, and need to improve your English language level before starting a degree programme at City, University of London. The Pre-sessional course runs from late June to early September. Depending on your current language level and degree programme requirements, you will be required to take a 12-week course starting at the end of June, an eight-week course starting in July, or a four-week course starting in August.

What will I study?

This course concentrates on academic English to develop your skills within a university context.

This course is designed to:

  • improve your English language proficiency in the core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • focus on subject-related work in your chosen area of study including a written project
  • help you to study independently using our extensive online materials
  • teach you how to give presentations on different areas of academic interest
  • provide contextual study skills that acclimatise you to the culture and expectations of a UK university.

You will also focus on subject-related work in your chosen area of study to help you learn how to effectively study independently using online and self-access materials.

On average, the course is comprised of two hour lessons (allowing time for class changeover), totalling 20 hours per week.

Assessment

You will be assessed to determine whether you have reached the appropriate level for your degree course. Methods of assessment will include short essays, an extended essay, an oral presentation and end-of-course exams. Acceptance on a degree course is at the discretion of City, University of London.

Where will it take me?

Course outcomes

As long as you have met the University's academic entry requirements, achieving the level of performance required in the Pre-Sessional English course to fulfill the conditions of your offer will allow you to progress to your University course without needing to retake the IELTS test.

How do I qualify?

 

Academic requirements:

You must hold an offer of a place on a degree programme at City, University of London.

English requirements:

From 6 April 2015, the Centre can only accept a UKVI approved IELTS test for this course. Read more about UKVI IELTS or contact us for more details.

What's the difference between the 12, 8 and 4 week course?

The 4 and 8 week courses have a higher English language entry requirement than the 12 week course. Please refer to the entry requirements to see which course you should take.

All rooms have their own bathroom and cooking facilities. Most of the rooms are Studio, but there is a limited number of Studio+ and Studio++ rooms available. Studio+ rooms are approximately 30% larger than the standard Studio, while Studio++ rooms are around 50% larger than standard Studio rooms.
