The Pre-sessional English course provides intensive preparation in academic English for students who are academically qualified and hold an offer to start an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at at Cass Business School in September.

If you hold an offer for a place at City, University of London you should choose the Pre-sessional English course instead.

The course will:

  • provide contextual study skills that help you to adjust to the culture of a UK university
  • enable you to adjust to the demands, challenges and expectations of UK higher education and culture
  • teach you how to give presentations on different areas of academic interest
  • provide you with a short period of time to adapt to living and studying in the UK prior to beginning your academic studies

Who should apply for the Pre-sessional English programme?

The Pre-sessional English course is suitable for students holding an offer for any undergraduate or postgraduate degree at Cass Business School where English is a condition of their offer. It's also suitable for any non-native speaker of English interested in taking additional language preparation ahead of their degree at Cass Business School.

What will I study?

This course concentrates on academic English to develop your skills within a university context.

This course is designed to:

  • Improve your English language proficiency in the core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • Teach you how to give presentations on different areas of cultural and academic interest
  • Focus on subject-related work in your chosen area of study including a written project
  • Help you to study independently using our extensive online materials
  • Provide contextual study skills that acclimatise you to the culture of a UK university.

You will also focus on subject-related work in your chosen area of study to help you learn how to effectively study independently using online and self-access materials.

Assessment

You will be assessed to determine whether you have reached the appropriate level for your degree course. Methods of assessment  include short essays, an extended essay, an oral presentation and end-of-course exams.

This course can help you reach conditions for English language entry set by Cass Business School. Decisions on Academic conditions are made by the Cass Business School admissions team.

Where will it take me?

Course outcomes

As long as you have met Cass Business School's academic entry requirements and any other outstanding conditions, achieving the level of performance required in the Pre-Sessional English course to fulfill the conditions of your offer will allow you to progress to your Cass Business School course without needing to retake the IELTS test.

Students must successfully achieve the English criteria required in order to join their chosen undergraduate degree programme.

How do I qualify?

 

Academic requirements:

You must hold an offer of a place on an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme at Cass Business School

English requirements:

Undergraduate

  • 6 weeks: IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each subskill) or IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each subskill) or equivalent
  • 8 weeks: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each subskill) or equivalent

Postgraduate

  • 4 weeks: IELTS 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.5 in writing)

From 6 April 2015, the Centre can only accept a UKVI approved IELTS test for this course. Read more about UKVI IELTS or contact us for more details.

What's the difference between the 8 and 6 week course?

The 8 and 6 week courses have different English language entry requirements. The 8 week course will have a lower entry requirement. Please refer to the entry requirements to see which course you should take.
