A full-time academic programme, the International Graduate Diploma prepares you for postgraduate study in engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University.

This course will offer you the opportunity to improve your language skills in preparation for postgraduate study, improve your understanding of business through core academic modules and develop the necessary study and research skills for postgraduate study. It will also help you to gain an understanding of the UK education system before entering as a postgraduate.

Who should apply for the Graduate Diploma programme?

The Graduate Diploma is suitable for international students who need an introduction to the study of a subject in preparation to study it at postgraduate level, or to upgrade qualifications if you have studied a 3 year Diploma in a relevant subject. The Graduate Diploma is also suitable for those that want to increase or update their subject knowledge or those that need to improve their English language study skills within the context of their chosen subject.

This course is not available for UK or EU students.


Successful completion of the International Graduate Diploma leads to Graduate Diploma of Higher Education (SCQF Level 10) awarded by Glasgow Caledonian University.

What will I study?

English for Academic Purposes

You will look at reading techniques and writing styles as well as developing your note taking and presentation skills. Additionally you will learn how to use dictionaries and other study aids.

You'll also study specialist modules. These depend on which postgraduate degree you choose to progress to and what your current qualifications are. Examples of modules you may study are:

  • Computer Aided Design
  • Engineering Design and Analysis
  • Control Systems
  • Image Processing

What are classes like?

The course includes an average of 21 hours per week of teaching. 

English language classes have a maximum of 16 students per class to ensure you have the attention and support you need from teaching staff.

Academic support

Throughout your programme you will receive advice and feedback from your teachers during seminars and tutorials. They will be able to answer any questions and provide guidance, to ensure your academic success.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through exams and coursework including:

  • written assignments
  • practical exercises
  • group and individual research projects
  • presentations
  • problem-solving exercises.

Marks do not count towards your final master's degree, but do help the university assess whether you are ready to progress to your chosen route of study.

How is the programme validated?

The programme is quality-assured and validated by Glasgow Caledonian University.

How do I qualify?

Academic requirements:

An ordinary degree or equivalent. Candidates with lesser qualifications but more than 3 years of work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

English requirements:

IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum 5.5 in all subskills) or equivalent.

If you do not meet the minimum English language level you can apply for our Academic English course.

Tuition fees do not include:

  • text books and other learning materials: an additional cost approximately £210 per academic course (three term), £290 per academic course (four term), £370 per academic course (five term)
  • enrolment fee: an additional charge of £150 per academic programme (charged upon confirmation)
