Why should I take the Pre-sessional English course?

If you have been accepted onto a pathway programme, undergraduate degree or postgraduate degree, and are already academically qualified you can use this course to improve your English quickly. Receive a joint CAS for your Pre-sessional English course and GCU programme.

What is special about the programme?

Pre-sessional English concentrates on academic English within a university environment, preparing you for degree study in the UK.

This course is designed to:

  • improve your English language in the core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing within a university context
  • focus on subject-related work including vocabulary, grammar, style and structure
  • help you to study independently using our extensive online materials
  • enable you to adjust to the demands, challenges and expectations of UK higher education

Who should apply for this course?

This course is suitable for you if you are academically qualified, hold an offer from Glasgow Caledonian University, and need to improve your English language level before starting an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in September at the University.

Depending on your current language level and degree programme requirements, you will be required to study either a six or 10-week course.

What will I study?

INTO Glasgow Caledonian University offers a range of Pre-sessional courses. Course lengths depend on your current English language ability. These include:

  • 10 week intensive programme (30 hours per week) - For students who need to improve their English language level by IELTS 1.0
  • 10 week standard programme (21 hours per week) - For students who need to improve their English language level by IELTS 0.5
  • 6 week intensive programme (30 hours per week) - For students who need to improve their English language level by IELTS 0.5
  • 6 week standard programme (21 hours per week) - This programme is designed for students who have already met their condition.

These courses all ensure that you will improve your language proficiency in core skills. You will learn to give presentations and study independently. These skills are vital to your university success.

Course outline

This course will develop a range of skills including:

  • English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in a university context
  • content-specific vocabulary, grammar and style
  • practise speaking English on topics relating to your degree programme
  • focus on subject related work in your chosen area 
  • help with independent study using our online materials

How do I qualify?

Academic requirements:

You must hold an offer of a place on a degree programme at Glasgow Caledonian University. 

To join the 6 week standard course you must hold an unconditional offer of a place on a degree programme at Glasgow Caledonian University.

English requirements:

6 week standard course: the IELTS score as stated in the unconditional degree offer. 

6 week intensive course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in all subskills) or equivalent - you must be a maximum of 0.5 IELTs lower than the level required. 

10 week standard course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in all subskills) or equivalent - applicants must be a maximum of 0.5 IELTs lower than the level required. If you hold an offer for MSc Public Health at GCU London, you must have IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all subskills) or equivalent.

10 week intensive course: IELTS 5.0 (with a minimum of 4.5 in all subskills) or equivalent - applicants must be a maximum of 1.0 IELTs lower than the level required.  f you hold an offer for MSc Public Health at GCU London, you must have IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all subskills) or equivalent.

Tracking your progress

Throughout the course, your progress will be assessed to ensure that you are getting the most out of your education, and ensure that you are developing the skills necessary to you success.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to determine whether you have met the University's English requirements before progressing to your degree programme. Assessment is similar to what you'll experience at university and includes:

  • written texts
  • extended essays
  • listening tests
  • presentations
  • portfolio work

Successful entry to a UK university

Assuming you have met the University's academic entry requirements, successful completion of the Pre-Sessional English course provides the necessary English language and study skills for entry to designated undergraduate or postgraduate courses at the Glasgow Caledonian University (without the need for an external English language exam). It will mean you have the enhanced level of accuracy and fluency for success at university and beyond.
