Designed to provide a link between undegraduate and postgraduate study, this 12-week programme offers a joint CAS with an unconditional offer for postgraduate study at Glasgow Caledonian University.

What is special about this programme?

The Pre-Master's will prepare you for a variety of degree programmes while developing your English language and study skills to the level required for successful postgraduate study.

The aims of the programme are:

  • to enable you to apply academic study skills within a practical context

What will I study?

You will study the following modules:

English Language for Academic Purposes

This module focuses on developing your academic writing skills for your Master's. This includes finding sources, critical reading and writing skills, academic vocabulary, note taking, presentation skills and reflective writing.

Academic Study Skills for Postgraduate Study

Building on skills gained at undergraduate level, this module includes the further development of study skills and techniques to help you transition to postgraduate level. This includes sourcing of information, referencing, participating in seminars and study techniques.

The project module will integrate all of the knowledge and skills you develop over the course of the Pre-Master's programme, drawing on a wide range of sources related to your chosen subject.


How will I be assessed?

Assessments are designed to prepare you for the requirements of postgraduate study while assessing your level of English overall and in each of the four skills. You will also be assessed via a combination of:

  • essays
  • reports
  • presentations
  • completion of an academic project portfolio

The 'English Language for Academic Purposes' module will be assessed via an English Language Test.

How do I qualify?

Academic requirements:

At least a minimum of a Third Class Honours degree (or country equivalent) or above in a related subject.

English requirements:

IELTS 5.5 overall (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill


IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill if progressing to MSc Human Resource Managment, MSc International Human Resource Management or MSc Public Health.
