International Year One in Business Management

Course options available

There are two options available for this course:

  • International Year One (3 terms) – this is the standard option, suitable for most students.
  • Extended International Year One (4 terms) – this option features an additional term of English at the beginning for extra language support and English language entry requirements are typically lower.

The International Year One will focusing on developing your academic and undergraduate research skills, as well as improving your English language abilities.

The programme covers everything you need in order to progress successfully to the MMU.

Teaching methods

During lessons, you will have the opportunity to take part in both presentations, workshops and interactive group work.

You will have continuous assessment and weekly homework to help improve your exam skills and give you guidance on how to structure essays suitable for university study.

To give you an advantage in your studies, teachers use online resources to upload relevant articles and videos which you can read or watch in advance.

For the Business stream, you to explore theories and their practical applications using real-world case studies.

You will independently research and present subjects which you will discuss during seminars helping improve your presentation skills.

Throughout your programme teachers will ensure you are aware of the latest in business and current affairs.

You will also benefit from supportive tutorials giving you practical advice on study skills and exam techniques to ensure you are prepared for Year 2 of your degree, whatever the subject.

Who should apply for the International Year One programme?

The International Year One is suitable for international students who have completed A-levels or a recognised International Foundation programme, or who are already in the first year of a relevant undergraduate degree in their home country, but do not meet the academic or English language requirements for direct entry to Manchester Metropolitan University.

Successful completion of this programme will also allow you to apply for entry to other universities in the UK.

This programme will help you enhance your subject knowledge and English language proficiency, develop necessary study and research skills, and adjust to the demands, challenges and expectations of UK higher education.

What will I study?

You will study the following core modules:

English for Academic Purposes and Key Skills

Language and study skills are incorporated into all aspects of the programme.

The EAP module is designed to be closely connected to all other academic modules.

The module is built around six strands: Academic Writing Skills; Academic Reading Skills; Lecture and Seminar Skills; Academic Skills; ICT and Tutorials.

You will study the following specialist modules:

Business Economics

In this module, you will develop an understanding of the competitive market within which businesses operate, learn about price mechanism and the basic principles of supply and demand, and examine the limitations and weaknesses of a market economy.

Business Skills

This module is designed to develop your academic and study skills.

You will consider the management of learning and personal development, research skills, the presentation of numerical information as well as group and team working.

You will also develop presentation and reflective skills.

Business Statistics

This module provides an introduction to the basic statistical techniques, which are used to analyse business data.

You will learn about the assumptions and principles of statistical methods, and develop an understanding of the basic techniques used to analyse statistical data in the business environment.

Financial Accounting

In this module, you will develop a sound foundation in the basic principles of double-entry bookkeeping and a basic understanding in the preparation of financial accounts.

Management Accounting

In this module, you will develop an understanding of the nature and purpose of management accounting and build up the management accounting skills necessary both to construct cost information and to interpret financial information for decision makers.

Management Themes and Case Studies

This module uses case studies and real-world examples to enable you to look at business problems from a management viewpoint.

You will also cover business strategy and strategic management.


This module provides an introduction to a range of theories and concepts underpinning key elements of marketing planning.

You will study the application of those theories and concepts to a range of different organisations.

Organisational Behaviour

This module is concerned with the study of how individuals and teams behave within organisations.

You will study a number of interdisciplinary factors relating to and impacting on behaviour within organisations covering a range of disciplines.

Progression to Manchester Metropolitan University

The International Year One is validated and quality-assured by NCUK and is an agreed progression route to Manchester Metropolitan University.

Successful completion, subject to meeting the specified progression requirements, offers guaranteed conditional entry to year two of an undergraduate degree at the University.

If you do not qualify for entry to Manchester Metropolitan University you can apply for entry to an appropriate course at one of NCUK's other owner universities.

Academic guidance

You will receive advice and feedback during seminars and tutorials. Regular one-to-one meetings with your personal tutor will help you plan for future effective study, and answer any questions to ensure your academic success.

We also have an International Progression Manager who will help with your application to Manchester Metropolitan University and arrange visits to your academic School so that you can learn more about your chosen degree.

How do I qualify?

Academic requirements:

Successful completion of A-levels, a recognised Foundation, first year of an overseas university degree programme, or equivalent with good grades.

Applicants for finance and accounting routes must have a minimum of GCSE grade C in Mathematics or equivalent.

English requirements:

4-term programme: IELTS 5.0 (with a minimum of 5.0 in all subskills) or equivalent.

3-term programme: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in reading and writing) or equivalent.

If you do not meet the minimum English language level you can apply for our Academic English course.


18 years and above.

All students commencing courses on a published September start date must be 18 years old by 30 September.

For the January start date, students must by 18 years old by 31 December of the preceding calendar year.

What's the difference between the 3 and 4-term courses?

The 4-term Extended International Foundation incorporates an additional term of intensive English language tuition at the beginning of the course, allowing you to improve your English to a level appropriate for academic study. It will typically have a lower English language entry requirement than the 3-term programme.

You will be required to pass the initial English language component before progressing to the next stage of the programme.

Where will this programme take me?

Successful completion of International Year One leads to the initial award of Certificate of Higher Education (FHEQ Level) from NCUK.
