Graduate Pathway in Journalism

Do you want to study for a graduate degree in the United States but need to improve English language skills or test scores? A Pathway program provides academic, language and cultural support in order to succeed at a US university. Students are guaranteed progression to a graduate degree program through a curriculum consisting of credit-earning courses. We provide full integration with domestic and international students on campus from highly trained university instructors and tutors while giving you academic support throughout the program.

About this program

The Master of Arts in Journalism at Marshall University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications prepares students for building professional skills, entering the research field or continuing to a PhD program. Students have the option of choosing between a professional and thesis track for their education. The MAJ program gives students many opportunities for hands-on learning with a modern television studio and equipment and a focus on digital media production and design. This degree program prepares graduates for a variety of professions related to Journalism and Mass Communications, as well as provides marketable skills for many other career fields.

*If you meet all of these criteria, you may apply directly to Marshall University If you do not meet these criteria, we encourage you to apply to our Pathway and English language programs.

**Students using Password and PTEA as proof of English level will take an English placement test upon arrival. Students scoring below the required entry standard for their Pathway program will be placed in Academic English.

Graduate Pathway in Journalism

What are the progression requirements?

After successfully completing the Pathway program, you are guaranteed to enter a second year of study. This transition to university from an INTO program is called progression. You must meet the following Marshall University Pathway Progression criteria in order to progress:

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA in graduate level courses
  • No grades below B in all 500/600 level courses
  • No grades below C in all ENG 150, 151 and 160 courses
  • No I grades

You are fully admitted to Marshall University provided they have successfully completed conditional admission criteria at the end of the Pathway program and submitted all required admission credentials.

Where will this take me?

Upon successful completion of the Graduate Pathway program, you will be ready to start your second year in Marshall University's graduate degree program in Journalism.
