Is Academic English right for me?

The Academic English program at INTO Oregon State University prepares international students, like you, for university study in the US. This academically rigorous program provides you with high-quality English language instruction and the academic skills to succeed at OSU through development of:

What will I study?

  • 7 levels of instruction
  • Foundation preparation through level 2 combines both General English and Academic English students
  • 18 hours per week of course work covering the core skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking (students in Levels 1 and 2 take 27 hours of lessons per week)
  • Choice of electives at higher levels

Does this program lead to further study?

You may progress to a Pathway program or undergraduate direct admission to a university degree program after achieving the language level required and meeting all other requirements.

How do I qualify?

Academic entry requirement: High School Diploma
Age requirement: 16 years and above
Language requirements: None; students will be assessed and placed upon arrival (see table below)

Academic English placement equivalencies

The table below gives a realistic estimation of the Academic English (AE) level that students enter on arrival. It is based on an analysis of placement data. All AE students take a test on arrival that places them in the most suitable AE level. AE is a great way to be fully prepared for a Pathway program.

What are the English language progression requirements?

Undergraduate Level Progression Requirement
4-Term Undergraduate Pathway Programs:
Completion of Academic English Level 3 with C (or Pass) or higher in all classes
3-Term Undergraduate Pathway Programs: Completion of Academic English Level 4 with C (or Pass) or higher in all classes
2-Term Undergraduate Pathway Programs: Completion of Academic English Level 5 with C (or Pass) or higher in all classes
1-Term Undergraduate Pathway Programs: Completion of Academic English Level 6 with C (or Pass) or higher in all classes
Direct Undergraduate Admission: Completion of Academic English Level 6 and all Academic English courses with minimum C (or Pass)

Graduate Level Progression Requirement 
3-Term Graduate Pathway Programs: Completion of Academic English Level 5 with C (or Pass) or higher in all classes
1- or 2-Term Graduate Pathway Programs: Completion of Academic English Level 6 with B (or Pass) or higher in all classes
Direct Graduate Admission: Completion of Academic English Level 6 with B (or Pass) or higher in all classes; some departments require standardized test scores
