English for University Study

Prepare the skills and English language you need for a degree at a UK university.

English for University Study will prepare you for successful undergraduate or postgraduate study at a UK university, or for entry to one of the academic preparation courses offered by INTO Queen's University Belfast.

What is special about the programme?

This is a year-round course of intensive academic English language study with multiple start dates, designed to prepare you either for entry to a further academic preparation programme at INTO Queen's or for entry to your degree at Queen's University Belfast.

You will develop your English language and academic study skills, as well as research skills at higher levels, and with multiple start dates and different durations of study, the course has the flexibility to cater for students with different language levels.

The course will help you adjust to the demands, challenges and expectations of UK higher education. You will also be able to practise your developing language skills in a vibrant learning environment where you can take advantage of the University's additional learning facilities and mix with a wide variety of international students.

What will I study?

This course will enable you to develop your knowledge, ability and confidence in a variety of skills that are essential for degree study, as well as giving you a greater command of written and spoken English.

You will study:

  • Language Development
  • Academic Speaking and Listening Skills
  • Academic Writing
  • Academic Reading and Study Skills
  • Project

Depending on your level of English, you will spend more hours each week on different modules.


Where will it take me?

As part of the course, you will receive independent advice and guidance to support your university selection and the process of applying to a UK university.

As long as you have met the academic requirements for your chosen degree programme, successful completion of the course offers:

  • direct entry to an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme at Queen's University Belfast or another UK university without the need for an external IELTS exam
  • Assured progression to the International Foundation or International Diploma programme without the need for an external IELTS exam.

How do I qualify?


English requirements:

A minimum of IELTS 3.0 (with 3.0 in writing) or equivalent score in a comparable test.

Tuition fees include:

  • 20 hours per week of taught lessons
  • tutorial support
  • welfare guidance
  • further study counselling
  • university resources and learning environment
  • learning materials, access to the internet and online learning resources

Students must take a minimum of one term.

Tuition fees do not include textbooks and other learning materials which are an additional £80 per academic term.

INTO Residence

Elms Student Village is located less than five minutes' walk from the INTO Centre and the University campus. Single en-suite study bedrooms with a shared kitchen and common room as well as access to laundry.
