International Year One in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering 

The International Year One combines academic study, intensive English language teaching and study skills to prepare you for direct entry into the second year of a university degree at Queen's.

There are three course options:

  • International Year One (3 terms) - this is the standard option
  • Extended International Year One (4 terms) - this option features an additional term of English at the beginning for extra language support
  • Extended International Year One (5 terms) - this option features two additional terms of English at the beginning for extra language support, with lower English language entry requirements

What is special about the programme?

The International Year One is a full-time academic programme that offers you the opportunity to improve your language skills and develop your study and research skills in preparation for undergraduate study. The International Year One is designed to increase your knowledge of academic theory, enabling you to enter directly into year two of an undergraduate degree. You will also benefit from:

  • professional support and guidance with university applications
  • the highest levels of personal care and support

Who should apply for the International Year One programme?

The International Year One is suitable for international students who have completed A-levels or a recognised International Foundation programme, or who are already in the first year of a relevant undergraduate degree in their home country, but do not meet the academic or English language requirements for direct entry to Queen's University Belfast.

What will I study?

Core modules:

English for Academic Purposes and Key Skills (20 credits)

This module will give you the language proficiency and academic study skills you will need to embark on the second year of an undergraduate course in a British university.

Engineering Mathematics 1 and 2 (10 credits each)

Mathematics is a fundamental discipline underpinning many areas of engineering. The purpose of this module is to provide you with a sound basis in engineering related mathematics such that you can deal with the wide range of modules that involve analytical methods.

 

 

Specialist modules (Semester 1):

Drawing and Design (10 credits)

In this module you will be introduced to the design process and learn to apply the principles of good design to the creation of appropriate artefacts in simple design exercises. You will learn how to draw engineering diagrams following standard conventions, use a computer-aided design (CAD) system to develop engineering drawings of components and assemblies and how to derive information from engineering drawings.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering (10 credits)

The module introduces the fundamental concepts of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and explains the operation of simple circuit elements and components in electrical and electronic systems. By the end of the module you will be able to understand and apply mathematical, scientific and engineering principles and tools to the analysis, synthesis, performance assessment, critical appraisal and evaluation of electrical and electronic engineering processes and systems.

Mechanical Principles (10 credits)

This module provides you with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to analyse the behaviour of simple mechanical systems subjected to the action of various forces and to determine the effects of loading in a range of static engineering systems.

Fluid Mechanics (10 credits)

By the end of the fluid mechanics module you should be able to understand the basic properties of fluids and their mechanics under static and dynamic conditions and apply the principles of conservation of mass, momentum and energy in engineering applications.

 

Specialist modules (Semester 2):

Dynamics (10 credits)

By the end of this module, you should be able to recall and apply Newton's laws of motion, use mathematical models to analyse the behaviour of simple mechanical systems and use the theory and principles of dynamics to carry out simple calculations.

Materials and Manufacture (10 credits)

This module introduces the basic properties of materials used in Mechanical Engineering. By the end of the module you will be able to identify the basic properties of materials for a particular component and reasons for selection of that material, recognise the basic principles of selecting manufacturing processes for a particular component, explain material characteristics and properties and relate them to performance, manufacturing process and the environment.

Structure and Stress Analysis (10 credits)

This module covers mathematical models to analyse the behaviour of simple mechanical systems. You will be able to use the theory and principles of statics to carry out simple calculations, describe the fundamentals of stress analysis and their applications in engineering and solve problems involving stresses and strains in engineering materials.

Thermodynamics (10 credits)

This module provides an elementary introduction to thermodynamics, including a discussion of the fundamental concepts of heat, work, energy and entropy. The module introduces the properties of different working fluids (vapours and gases) and also provides the necessary analytical skills to address practical and theoretical issues arising from the analysis of thermodynamic machinery.

 

How will I be assessed?

Successful completion of the International Diploma, subject to getting the required grades for your intended degree, gives you the opportunity to progress to the second year of an undergraduate degree at Queen's University Belfast.

To qualify, you will need to:

  • You will need to pass all of your subject modules to the levels required to progress.
  • You will need to achieve the required grades in your English for Academic Purposes class.

Teaching methods

The International Year One Engineering offers smaller classes than university study, providing you with a greater student/teacher interaction. All teachers for this course are qualified to doctorate level. 

You'll gain experience in using industry standard computer aided design and simulation tools. You'll be given the opportunity to work in the University's labs, using modern equipment in practical work inside and outside of class.

How do I qualify?

 

Academic requirements:

Two 'D' Grades from a UK A-level board, a recognised foundation, first year of an overseas university degree programme or equivalent with good grades.

You must have a minimum of A-level grade 'D' in each of Mathematics and Physics or equivalent.

Four term: IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.

Five term: IELTS 4.5 or equivalent.

Age: 16 years and above

All students commencing courses for the September start date must be 17 years old by 31 December of that calendar year. For all other start dates, students must be 17 years old on the published start date of the course.
