Journalism professor Matt Carlson doesn’t want to just teach you about reporting the news. He wants you to think about how the news is made.

"My research interests are how journalism is changing,” he says. "So I look at ideas in journalism and how we talk about journalism. And how that’s being transformed in the digital media environment.”

An Associate Professor in Saint Louis University’s Communications Department since 2007, Carlson wrote a book that examines how individuals and groups struggle over the definition of what journalism is, who is a journalist, and what direction journalism should take. That’s what he wants his students to think about during their studies.

"We learn how to think about media,” he says. "Not just do it, but think about it. This is important in a rapidly changing media environment.”
