Living

In the middle of it all

With 99 historic neighborhoods, Birmingham has been referred to as the cradle of the American Civil Rights Movement. Its convenient location in the southeast makes it easily accessible from major hubs in the region.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s campus sits in the heart of Birmingham's Southside neighborhood. This thriving area, in the south end of downtown, backs up to the stunning Appalachian Mountains. No matter where you want to go, you are only a short distance from parks and hiking trails to dinner and fun nightlife. Make sure you take some time to truly experience everything UAB has to offer. Take nature trips like canoeing on the Warrior, Sipsey or Coosa rivers. The theatre and ballet shows highlight a robust nightlife scene. Just visiting UAB's campus can be an all-day journey.

Birmingham: Historical and diverse

Culture and history collide in Birmingham's array of things to do. Quality entertainment, cuisine, the arts, nightlife and the great outdoors are all within your reach from UAB's campus.

Take a trip to the city's plentiful antique shops, many of which have been featured in upscale lifestyle magazines around the country.  Trendy malls bring high-end shops to the state’s retail scene, while chain stores can offer you anything a college student could need... Dozens of new art galleries show off a variety of local paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics and modern art.

Most importantly, you'll find a city as diverse as any other in the US. A spectrum of attitudes and cultures dominates the scene, making students from all around feel welcome the moment they arrive.
