Meet Max Phillip Weinhold from Germany, who graduated in BSc Molecular Biology and Genetics from UEA.

What is your favourite module on the International Foundation programme?

My favourite module is Biology, even though I’m also very interested in Physics. Biology is really interesting because we’re studying what is inside all human beings – what is inside ourselves. I’m really excited to further my knowledge in that area and study things that I didn’t learn in school.

Could you describe a practical lesson?

We had a practical where we looked at daphnia, which are really, really small, shrimp-like organisms. We set them under different conditions and counted their heartbeats under a microscope. For example, we added coffee for caffeine, also alcohol, and aspirin, then recorded how their heartbeat would change.

How do you think that INTO prepared you for university study?

While high school gives a lot of theoretical preparation for university study, science courses also require a lot of practical work as well. I’ve found that the International Foundation programme has really prepared me for the practicals I’ll be doing and the style of reports I’ll be writing. In my scientific English classes I’ve learned how to write lab reports, how to to do literature reviews of specific topics, how to do research properly, how to find reliable sources and how to put all of that into one piece of work that I can be proud of and that will get me good grades.

What do you think is the best thing about studying at INTO UEA?

The best thing about studying at INTO is all the support from the teachers and the actual make up of the modules. Our teachers specifically tailored the modules to what us students want to study at university. Most people in my group want to study Pharmacy, which is why our Chemistry teachers have focused on Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
