Additional academic English

The International Graduate Diploma with Pre-sessional English lasts four terms in total. It incorporates a term of Academic English at the beginning of the course that can be studied on a single CAS.

This additional term of study will develop your English language and academic study skills, as well as your research skills for effective university study.

What is special about the programme?

The INTO UEA International Graduate Diploma is designed to improve your academic theory, intensive English language skills, and study and research abilities to prepare for postgraduate study at the University of East Anglia.

It offers:

You will receive advice and feedback during seminars and tutorials. Regular one-to-one meetings with your personal tutor will help you plan for future effective study, and answer any questions to ensure your academic success.

Teaching methods

Interactive lectures from experienced academic faculty, as well as professionals from industry, will be followed by a seminar to discuss topics raised during the lectures.

Seminars follow a workshop style, where discussion and presentation are used to prepare you for postgraduate study. Seminars will debate, analyse and evaluate up-to-date business and economics topics led by academics and practitioners in the field.

Student-led workshops will also improve group leadership and presentation skills in preparation for your chosen career.

You will also benefit from an introduction to the application of research skills as preparation for postgraduate studies and dissertations.

Who should apply for the International Graduate Diploma programme?

The International Graduate Diploma is suitable for students who want to:

  • be introduced to a subject so that you can study it at postgraduate level
  • upgrade your qualifications if you have studied a 3-year diploma in a relevant subject
  • increase or update your subject knowledge
  • improve your English language study skills within the context of your chosen subject

What will I study?

The additional academic English component of this course comprises 20 hours of taught lessons per week plus directed study.

  • You will initially focus on developing core English language skills, developing your knowledge and confidence in reading, writing, listening, speaking and pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.
  • After developing your core skills, you will focus on skills relevant to your study, including teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking and time management.
  • In order to make good progress, you are expected to do approximately 20 additional hours of private study outside class, which may include homework, assignments, coursework or online learning.

You will then progress on to the International Graduate Diploma in Business course where you will study the following modules:

Applied Research Skills and Research Project in Business

This module provides a basic understanding of the nature of enquiry, developing your ability to access and analyse information.

A large part of the module will involve analysing and interpreting existing data from various fields of research.

You will also be introduced to the theoretical and practical differences between quantitative and qualitative research methods and will explore other research methodologies.

Academic content will be accompanied by skills-based and example-led teaching. You will make relevant enquiries into your topic of interest and follow up the enquiry with an independent research project in term three.

Core Business

This module will provide you with a basic understanding of business management.

It introduces the business world in a range of topics related to business management, and the concepts and vocabulary that underpin business studies.

A large part of this module involves analysing and interpreting case studies with the aim of developing your analytical and interpretation skills.

Core Economics

The module looks at the wider economic environment and applies economic thinking to current issues and problems.

You will be introduced to the concepts and vocabulary underlying the subject.

English Language and Communication Skills

Develop English skills to the level required for postgraduate study at UEA.

Relating to your chosen pathway, you will improve your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, as well as academic abilities in written work, delivering presentations and debating.

Statistics for Quantitative Research

You will develop your quantitative skills and gain an insight into inferential statistics, statistical concepts and methods of data analysis commonly applied in business and social sciences.

This module has a strong practical element and you will develop your numeracy skills by engaging in statistical analyses of a range of problems.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is a combination of formal examinations and assessed coursework. You will have to carry out an independent research project, which will be assessed by the final written version as well as an accompanying presentation.

Your English language and pathway subject process will be assessed through a combination of examinations and coursework, including:

  • written assignment
  • practical exercises
  • group and individual
  • research projects
  • presentations
  • problem-solving exercises

Grades from the International Graduate Diploma programme do not count towards your final degree, but help the University determine whether you meet the specified progression grades for direct entry to your chosen degree programme.

How do I qualify?

Academic requirements:

Pass in an undergraduate degree in any academic subject (as approved by INTO UEA).


Diploma (3-5 years) with high grades in any academic subject (as approved by INTO UEA).

English requirements:

IELTS 5.0 (with a minimum of 5.0 in all subskills) or equivalent.

If you do not meet the minimum English language level you can apply for our Academic English course.

Age: 18 years and above.

Applicants aiming for an Advanced MSc at Norwich Business School: students must have obtained a degree in a business-related subject area.

Applicants aiming for other MSc courses at Norwich Business School: students with an existing business degree studied in the UK or from an overseas UK campus will require approval from Norwich Business School Admissions prior to entry onto the International Graduate Diploma programme.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees include access to the virtual learning environment; library, internet and IT services; exam fees; and field trips and course-related excursions.

Tuition fees do not include:

  • enrolment fee: an additional charge of £150 per academic programme (to be charged upon confirmation)
  • textbooks and other learning materials: an additional charge in the region of £280 per academic course

Where will this programme take me?

Students must pass the English Language course in order to progress onto the International Graduate Diploma in Business part of their course.

Students must successfully complete the International Graduate Diploma with the published progression grades to progress to their chosen postgraduate course.

Successful completion of the International Graduate Diploma leads to the award of International Graduate Diploma in Higher Education (FHEQ Level 6) from UEA.
