International Year One in International Development with Media

Prepare for entry to Year 2 of six different undergraduate degrees in International Development at the University of East Anglia.

What is special about this programme?

The International Year One programme is designed to improve your academic and English language skills, and develop your research abilities in preparation for undergraduate study at the University of East Anglia.

You’ll study alongside current University of East Anglia students for some of your modules, and with INTO students for the remainder of your course. You’ll also benefit from advice and feedback during seminars and tutorials, as well as regular one-to-one meetings with your personal tutor to help you plan for future studies and ensure academic success.

Teaching methods

The International Year One programme focuses on the media, political and economic dimensions of international development. Students will develop a thorough understanding of contemporary debates and issues in international development, and encounter a wide variety of topics, from poverty and gender inequality to conflict and economic growth, as well as developing an understanding of the practical application of media theories, principles and concepts in the context of development.

You will attend some lectures and seminars for your International Development modules at UEA alongside current first year students. The majority of seminars and workshops, including language and study skills support, will be taught and assessed at INTO UEA, working in small groups with your tutors to develop your understanding of the topics.

Who should apply for the International Year One programme?

The International Year One is suitable for international students who have completed A-levels or equivalent, or a recognised International Foundation programme, or who are already in the first year of a relevant undergraduate degree in their home country, but don’t meet the academic or English language requirements for direct entry to the University of East Anglia.

What will I study?

During this course, you will study modules that provide you with a strong foundation understanding of International Development. You’ll study topics such as social anthropology and politics, as well as English and study skills to help prepare you for university-level study.

*The students will choose one of these modules which will determine their choices of degree pathway at UEA:

Natural Resources module:

  • BA (Hons) International Development
  • BSc (Hons) International Development and the Environment

Media module:

  • BA (Hons) Media and International Development

Natural Resources or Media module:

  • BA (Hons) International Development with Anthropology
  • BA (Hons) International Development with Economics
  • BA (Hons) International Development with Politics

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is a combination of formal examinations and coursework, including written assignments, practical exercises, group and individual research projects, presentations and problem-solving exercises.

Grades from the International Year One programme do not count towards your final degree, but they help the University assess your abilities in your chosen field of study.

How do I qualify?

Academic requirements:

A-levels at grade BBC, a recognised Foundation programme, or the first year of an overseas university degree programme with good grades, or equivalent.

English requirements:

3-term programme: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each subskill) or equivalent.

If you do not meet the minimum English language level you can apply for our Academic English course.

Age:

17 years and above.

All students commencing courses on a published September start date must be 17 years old by 31 December of that calendar year.

  • enrolment fee: an additional charge of £150 per academic programme (to be charged upon confirmation)

Where will this programme take me?

Successful completion of the International Year One leads to the initial award of Certificate of Higher Education (FHEQ Level 4) from UEA.
