English for University Study

What is special about the programme?

English for University Study (not accredited) is a year-round course of intensive academic English language study designed to prepare you either for entry to a further academic preparation programme at INTO University of Exeter or for entry to your degree at the University of Exeter.

The course will help you adjust to the demands, challenges and expectations of UK higher education. You will also be able to practise your developing language skills in a vibrant learning environment where you can take advantage of the University's additional learning facilities and mix with a wide variety of British and international students.

Enhanced English for University Study

Enhanced English for University Study is a course which offers the standard 20 contact hours per week plus an extra module to maximise your learning experience. This additional module will focus on language and provide a further 10 learning hours per week which will utilise both face-to-face and online activities, as well as flexible online coursework so you can work at a time that suits you.

Who should apply?

The Enhanced English for University Study course is well suited to students who have a score of between IELTS 4.0 and 5.5 on arrival and intend to progress on to an academic programme with INTO. It is designed to motivated students who want to make quick progress and intend to improve their IELTS score by up to one full point. Please note, as all students improve at different speeds, when calculating your study plan you should base this on an increase of between 0.5 and 1.0 IELTS band each term.

What will I study?

You will initially focus on developing core English language skills, developing your knowledge and confidence in reading, writing, listening, speaking and pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.

After developing your core skills, you will focus on skills relevant to your study, including teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking and time management.

Depending on your level of English, you will spend more hours each week on different modules.



At the end of each term, your skills and language will be assessed to give a clear indication of your progress. Methods of assessment may include:

  • written assignments
  • presentations
  • research projects
  • reading, writing and listening examinations


Where will it take me?

Course outcomes

As part of the course, you will receive independent advice and guidance to support your university selection and the process of applying to a UK university.

As long as you have met the academic requirements for your chosen degree programme, successful completion of the course offers:

  • direct entry to an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme at the University of Exeter or another UK university without the need for an external IELTS exam
  • Assured progression to the International Foundation or International Diploma or Graduate Diploma programme, subject to meeting Tier 4 student visa requirements, without an IELTS exam.

Enhanced English for University Study

What will I study?

This programme provides an extra 10 learning hours per week to the 20 contact hours on the standard English for University Study course. You will expand on core language skills and vocabulary, and practice what you have learned in class, benefitting from additional face-to-face contact hours and online learning to encourage engagement and communication in English.

How do I qualify?

English requirements:

A minimum of IELTS 3.0 (with a minimum of 3.0 in writing) or equivalent.  

From 6 April 2015, the Centre can only accept a UKVI approved IELTS test for this course. Read more about UKVI IELTS or contact us for more details.

Age requirement:

17 years or above Students aged 16 will be accepted if holding an offer for progression to the International Foundation (subject to meeting the Foundation age requirement).

Tuition fees include:

  • 20 hours per week of university style learning
  • tutorial support
  • welfare guidance
  • further study counselling
  • university resources and learning environment
  • access to the internet and online learning resources

Students must take a minimum of one term. Tuition fees do not include textbooks and other learning materials which are an additional £80 per academic term.

How long will it take to improve my IELTS score?

On average students are likely to progress at a rate of about 0.5 on the IELTS scale for every 12 weeks of study. So if you only need to improve your IELTS score by 0.5 you need to study this course for one term. If you need to improve by 1.0 IELTS score then take two terms. Please note that these are guidelines only and every student is different.
