What's special about this course?

The Pre-Sessional course provides intensive English language preparation in a university environment. With highly experienced teachers, there is no better preparation for your next steps.

Depending on your current language level and degree programme requirements, you will be required to study either a 12 week (June to August) or six week (July to August) course. There is also a 3 week (August) course available if you already hold an unconditional offer of a place on a degree at the University of Stirling.

Who should apply for the Pre-sessional English programme?

Academically qualified students who have already been accepted into a University undergraduate or postgraduate course can use this course to improve their English quickly.

Where will it take me?

Assuming you have already met the University's academic entry requirements (and any other outstanding conditions), successfully completing the Pre-Sessional English course fulfils the English language conditions of your offer and will allow you to progress to your university course, without needing to retake the IELTS test.

What will I study?

The course is designed to:

  • provide contextual study skills, that acclimatise you to the culture of a UK university
  • enable you to adjust to the demands, challenges and expectations of UK higher education and culture
  • teach you how to give presentations on different areas of academic interest
  • provide you with a short period of time to adapt to living and studying in the UK prior to beginning your academic studies.

Class hours are up to 24 hours per week. Please note that lessons are one hour including an allowance for class changeover.

How do I qualify?

Academic requirements:

Applicants must hold an offer of a place on a degree programme at the University of Stirling

English requirements:

Applicants must provide an official IELTS test score.

To progress to a degree programme that requires IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.5 in reading and writing):

12 week course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in reading and writing and 5.0 in listening and speaking)

6 week course: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in reading and writing and 5.5 in listening and speaking)  

To progress to a degree programme that requires IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in all subskills):

12 week course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing and 5.0 in all other subskills)

6 week course: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in all other subskills)

To progress to a degree programme that requires IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all subskills):

12 week course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in writing and no less than 4.5 in any subskill)

6 week course: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing and no less than 5.0 in any subskill)

To progress to a degree programme that requires IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all subskills):

12 week course: IELTS 5.0 (with a minimum of 5.0 in writing and 4.5 in all other subskills)

6 week course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing and 5.0 in all other subskills)

If you apply for the Pre-sessional English programme and the only outstanding condition for your degree programme is English language (or if you are holding an unconditional offer), the University of Stirling will automatically issue you with a joint Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS), provided you meet the Pre-sessional English course entry requirements. This allows you to obtain one student visa to cover both programmes.

Tracking your progress

You will be assessed to determine whether you have reached the appropriate level for your degree course. Methods of assessment will include short essays, an extended essay, an oral presentation and end-of-course exams.

Successful entry to university

You will be internally assessed to evaluate whether you have reached the appropriate level for your degree course. 

Assuming you have met the University''s academic entry requirements, successful completion of the Pre-Sessional English course provides the necessary English language and study skills to fufil the conditions of your offer and allow you to progress to your degree course at the University of Stirling, without the need to retake the IELTS exam. It will mean you have the enhanced level of accuracy and fluency for success at university and beyond.
